October 30, 2008//Bethesda, Md.//Haluk Ariturk, FSA, will retire from Acacia Life Insurance Company, a UNIFI company, as chairman, president and chief executive officer and from UNIFI Companies’ board of directors effective October 31, 2008. Ariturk’s responsibilities will be assumed by Barbara Krumsiek, who will serve as Acacia Life chair, and Salene Hitchcock-Gear will serve as president and CEO of Acacia Life.
Ariturk joined Acacia Life in 1982 as a financial actuary and served in progressive capacities over the past 26 years, including the company’s chief actuary, senior vice president operations and chief operating officer. He led the integration implementation when the Ameritas and Acacia mutual holding companies merged in January 1999, and again in 2005 with the successful merger of The Ameritas Acacia Companies and The Union Central Life Insurance Company to become UNIFI Mutual Holding Company.
He was elected executive vice president of Ameritas Acacia Mutual Holding Company Board of Directors in November 2002. In 2006, he was elected director and executive vice president of UNIFI Mutual Holding Company and Ameritas Holding Company.
Active in industry and civic organizations, Ariturk serves on the boards of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington, American Council of Life Insurance Forum 500 and Insurance Marketing Standards Association, and is a member of the Washington CEO Group. He previously served on the advisory board of George Washington University Business School and LOMA’a financial analysis committee, and was a member of the Maryland CEO Group.
Ariturk earned a B.A. degree in mathematics from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, and completed his graduate work at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., holding a doctorate in math and operations research. He conducted post-doctoral research at The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.
