Women’s Bowling
Years playing: 14
What is your current position on the team?
Bowling is a very unique sport in which we don’t necessarily have set positions. Up until college, most of, if not all of, our bowling is individual. Once we get to college our coaches set the line ups but can change and alter it whenever needed.
What sparked your interest in athletics?
Growing up, I played all sorts of sports, field hockey, lacrosse, and basketball, besides bowling. I always enjoyed the thrill of competing at whatever stage I was on, and I picked bowling primarily because of the abundance of scholarship opportunities. I felt like it’s a sport where you’re never done learning no matter how successful you are, and because I always had the most fun competitively.
Who are the women in athletics that have influenced you the most?
Diandra Asbaty is someone I always looked up to. Not only is she an extremely successful Nebraska alum but also someone who is constantly giving back to our sport. Growing up, I got the opportunity to compete in some of her events, and she always took the time to offer me advice and insights beyond the lanes.
What advice would you give to young women entering athletics?
Try it all out! Do not limit yourself to just what the “popular” sport is and give every sport you try out your all. You never know what other kinds of opportunities there are out there for you!
How have you seen the role of women in athletics evolve?
I think the role of women in athletics has evolved significantly. You are beginning to see more women not only competing in sports but also coaching in sports and giving back, which I think is huge.
What is one of your favorite moments or career highlights?
One of my favorite moments was making it out of the regional last year and going to the Final Four in Las Vegas. Despite a loss, the memories made and experience learned was unforgettable and keeps me striving for more.
Is there a uniform, award or object in sports that holds special meaning for you?
A uniform that holds special meaning for me is our Nebraska jerseys! Prior to coming to Nebraska, I never truly understood the significance of the “N” and how much it meant to people. Usually growing up we would have our own names on the back of our jerseys, but now I think competing for the “N” on our chest means so much more than people can really imagine.
