Cookie Statement
This Cookie Statement explains how Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. together with its affiliated companies Ameritas Advisory Service, LLC; Ameritas Investment Company, LLC; Variable Contract Agency, LLC; Ameritas Investment Partners, Inc.; and Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. of New York (collectively, “Ameritas”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies on our websites at ameritas.com and other websites and mobile applications, as more generally described in our Ameritas General Privacy Notice (the “Website(s)”).
What are cookies and pixels?
“Cookies” are small data files that are placed on your computer or other device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by website owners in order to make their websites function properly, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.
Cookies set by the website owner (in this case, Ameritas) are called “first party cookies”. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called “third party cookies”. Third party cookies enable third party features or functionalities to be provided on or through the website (e.g. like website analytics, advertising, interactive content and analytics). The parties that set these third-party cookies can recognize your device both when it visits the website in question and in some cases when it visits certain other websites.
Cookies are not the only way to recognize or track visitors to a website. We may use other, similar technologies from time to time, like pixels (sometimes called “web beacons” or “clear gifs”). Pixels allow us to measure the effectiveness of our website advertising.
Do you serve targeted advertising?
Yes, subject to your ability to opt out as described below. Third parties may serve cookies on your computer or mobile device to serve advertising through our Websites. These companies may use information about your visits to this and other websites in order to provide relevant advertisements about goods and services that you may be interested in.
They may also employ technology that is used to measure the effectiveness of advertisements. This can be accomplished by them using cookies or pixels to collect information about your visits to this and other sites in order to provide relevant advertisements about goods and services of potential interest to you.
Why do we use cookies?
We use first-party and third-party cookies for several reasons. Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Websites to operate, and we refer to these as “essential” or “strictly necessary” cookies. Other cookies also enable us to track and target the interests of our users to enhance the experience on our Websites. Third parties serve cookies through our Websites for advertising, analytics and other purposes. This is described in more detail below.
The specific types of first- and third-party cookies served through our Websites and the purposes they perform are described below:
Types of cookies
“Essential” or “strictly necessary” cookies: These cookies are strictly necessary for our website to function properly, for security, or to provide you with services available through our Websites and to use some of its features, such as access to secure areas. Because these cookies are strictly necessary to deliver the Websites to you, you cannot opt out of them.
“Performance” or “analytics” cookies: These cookies are used to monitor site traffic for purposes of maintaining or improving Website performance and functionality. They may also help us understand how and to what extent our Websites are being used. Without these cookies, certain Website functionality or performance may become impaired or unavailable. To opt out of these cookies, you may set your preferences using our cookie banner, as well as through alternative methods as described below under “How can I control cookies?”
“Marketing” or “advertising” cookies: These cookies may help us understand how effective marketing campaigns are, or to help us customize our Websites for you. They may also be used to present you with advertisements, products, or features that may be of interest to you. For example, we may use third-party cookies from social networking sites to advertise to you and enable you to share pages and content that you find interesting on our Websites through third party social networking and other websites. We may also use third-party advertising cookies to make advertising messages more relevant to you, to prevent the same ad from continuously reappearing, to ensure that ads are properly displayed for advertisers, and in some cases, to select advertisements that are based on your interests. To opt out of these cookies, you may set your preferences using our cookie banner, as well as through alternative methods as described below under “How can I control cookies?”
How can I control cookies?
You have the right to decide to opt out of non-essential cookies, and there are various ways you can exercise those rights. First, you can engage with our cookie banner on our website. Upon visiting the home page, you should see a pop up banner at bottom of your browser with a link to our cookie policy and privacy notice. Click on “Cookie Settings” to access our Privacy Preference Center, where you can click on the green toggle button next to “Analytics Cookies” and “Marketing Cookies” to opt out. You can also access it here.
Alternatively, you can adjust browser settings, add opt out browser extensions, or visit the third parties directly to opt out with respect to those third parties’ collection of information via their platforms. See the third-party links below for more detail:
Google Analytics: Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
Double-click (Google): You can manage your preferences and opt-out of Google’s interest-based ads in your Google Ads Setting.
Facebook and affiliated companies: Cookies & Other Storage Technologies
LinkedIn: Privacy Policy
Google, Inc. (YouTube): How Google Uses Cookies
You can set or amend your web browser controls (e.g., private browser or incognito mode) to accept or refuse cookies. As stated above, if you choose to reject certain cookies, you may still use our website, though your access to some functionality and areas of our website may be restricted. As the means by which you can refuse cookies through your web browser controls vary from browser-to-browser, you should visit your browser’s help menu for more information.
In addition, most advertising networks offer you a way to opt out of targeted advertising. If you would like to find out more information, please visit WebChoices / YourOnlineChoices.
Do Not Track (DNT) and Global Privacy Control (GPC)
Some browsers include a “Do Not Track” (DNT) setting that can send a signal to the online services you visit indicating you do not wish to be tracked. Because there is not a uniform standard on how to respond to or interpret DNT signals, our Site does not currently process or respond to DNT signals. Instead, you can use the range of other tools described to control data collection and use, including the cookie banner.
For instance, our website does recognize and process Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. When you enable a GPC signal in your browser or device, we treat this as a valid request to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your personal information, as well as to opt out of targeted advertising, for that browser or device. You can learn more about Global Privacy Control and how to activate it by visiting the Global Privacy Control Website.
How often will you update this Cookie Statement?
We will update this Cookie Statement from time to time in order to reflect, changes to the ways in which we use cookies or related technologies, or for other operational, legal or regulatory reasons. The date at the top of this Cookie Statement indicates when it was last updated. Please, therefore, re-visit this Cookie Statement regularly to stay informed about our use of cookies and related technologies.
Where can I get further information?
If you have any questions about our use of cookies or other technologies, contact us at privacy@ameritas.com or such other contact information provided in our Ameritas General Privacy Notice.
