Different types of governmental plans

457(b) plans

Like 401(k) plans, these plans allow employees to set aside part of their income for retirement. Employees benefit from the tax-deferred growth of contributions made to the plan.

401(a) plans

A 401(a) plan may be paired with a 457(b) plan, where the 457(b) plan receives the employee elective deferrals and the 401(a) plan is the primary plan for employer contributions. The contribution limits for 401(a) and 457(b) plans are separate so employees can contribute the full amounts allowed under each plan.

414(h) plans

This option allows a governmental employer to establish a money purchase pension plan with mandatory employee contributions, treating them as pre-tax contributions and providing tax benefits for the employee. This is not a stand-alone provision and is only available as part of the 401(a) plan.
